Home of Robinson Honor
Robinson teachers remain focused on providing the best possible opportunities for students to achieve. We know that students in grades 7-10 are not only expected to pass their classes, but also to demonstrate learning by passing SOL tests in many subjects. Students currently in grade 10 are the first class to be required to pass SOL tests for graduation. Last month, SOL test results for Robinson were published in the RAM GRAM (also available on the PTSA website www.robinsonptsa.freeservers.com). We were especially pleased to report that those tests taken by 9th graders last year in Algebra I, Biology, and World History & Geography had very high pass rates. The students took these tests seriously, prepared well, and most were successful. Those students who were not successful on SOL tests in these 9th grade classes have been and will be given opportunities for remediation if they want to retake tests. Students may also earn the required verified credits by passing tests taken in certain subjects as 10th graders. Those students enrolled in Special Education programs have options appropriate for their special needs. Our goal is to help every Robinson student meet the high standards for graduation in the state of Virginia.
Providing the support students need to graduate from high school is, of course, our fundamental responsibility. But I know that you expect much more from us. We are also committed to maintaining the kind of learning environment that promotes citizenship and character so that Robinson graduates are prepared to make a positive contribution to society. To this end, ROBINSON HONOR, a statement of our beliefs as a school community, has been emphasized this year. ROBINSON HONOR states that we value honesty, integrity and respect and hold ourselves responsible for acting on these values. In this large and diverse school, there are times when these beliefs are tested. But I am seeing more evidence that students will act on their convictions when given opportunities. Certainly the acts of patriotism and charity that have occurred since September 11 have demonstrated the character of many students. I have also known of many other occasions when students gave their time and energy to help others or support a good cause. Just like adults, teenagers want to do things that have meaning and purpose.
Empowerment – the sense that you can make a difference and that you have a valued place or role - is one of the asset types identified by the Search Institute as necessary for healthy development. C. Fred Bateman, author of Empowering Your Child defines empowerment with this equation:
Interacting with life’s challenges + Influencing these challenges in valuable ways for all = EMPOWERMENT
When life is challenging, our parental instincts make us want to protect children and keep them as secure as possible - and it is essential that they know that they are safe. But it is also important to allow young people to cope with challenges by acting on their beliefs and feelings. Such actions may not make the pressures and problems go away, but they can help children become more resilient and confident.
The longer I do this job, the more trust I have in the goodness and strength of our youth and the more I look for ways to empower them. Sometimes that means letting go a little and trusting a lot, but I find more often than not that Robinson students do not disappoint me.
Sincerely,
Ann Monday
Principal

CREATING A HEALTHY HOUSE FOR HOMEWORK
How is the homework going at your house? Getting ready for school means getting ready for homework—for parents as well as for students. Although there are many factors in a student's success in school, homework is one factor on which parents can work closely with their youth. In fact, many researchers have examined the impact that parental involvement has on homework success and, in general, parents' involvement in their student’s homework can help that student do well in school.
With this fact in mind, here are some suggestions from researchers concerning what parents can do to assist their youth with homework.
Make homework a priority.
Show interest in your student’s learning/education.
Know the homework policy of your student’s teachers.
Set aside a time and place to study and to do homework.
Help your youth keep track of daily assignments.
Check your student’s completed homework.
Help your youth develop a study plan.
Help your youth learn time management skills.
Be consistent!
Make your house a healthy homework house, thereby increasing academic success at school. That’s just one more way we ensure our youth will have the best possible educational experience at Robinson.
Don’t forget to join us on campus Nov. 12th for the Robinson Open House. I hope to see you there.

This year’s OPEN HOUSE is on Monday, November 12th. All parents are welcome to attend classes that day, to eat in the cafeteria, to have coffee with PTSA members, and to see what life is like at Robinson during the school day.
November 12th is a BLUE DAY. Your students will have periods 1, 3, 5, and 7. You are welcome to follow your child’s schedule and attend those classes meeting on November 12th. However, if you would like to visit classes that your child has on GOLD DAYS, teacher schedules will be available in the Main Office on the 12th so that you may find out where and when teachers have classes.
As always, we ask you as a matter of courtesy to send a note to the teachers whose classes you plan to visit. They will then be able to make the seating or other accommodations needed. If you plan to stay for only a part of the class, please note this to teachers in advance so that they are not surprised if you come in late or leave early!

The Class of 2005 spearheaded the efforts at Robinson to collect money for Afghan children, as President Bush requested during his televised address to the nation. The drive was extremely successful and reflected the concern that Robinson students have for children around the world. Thanks to everyone who contributed and to the volunteer moms who helped to make this activity a reality.

THE VIEW FROM THE MIDDLE SCHOOL
The Middle School Magazine Drive has ended and the money has been counted. Robinson Middle School students brought in $68,000! While this fell short of our goal of $70,000, it surpassed last year’s total by $10,000. Thank you for supporting the drive and the middle school. With our share of the money (around $31,000 before expenses are taken out), we will be able to provide field trips for each 7th grade team, fund the 8th Grade Day activities, provide funds for The Medallion, the middle school newspaper and Mindscapes, the literary magazine. We recently bought ten new computers for our business department. We are now in the process of buying items that our teachers throughout the middle school have requested to help enrich their instruction of your students. The students really benefit from this fundraiser.
Thank you to all of those parents who volunteered to help with this year’s Magazine Drive. An extra special “Thank You” to: Kathy Skocik who spent countless hours preparing the packets of materials, classroom collection envelopes and copying materials as needed; Anchalee Burbach and Caroline McDonald for being responsible for the prize distribution during lunch periods and on Game Day; Judy Huntzinger and Therese Farry, who oversaw the collection and financial accounting of the monies turned in by the students. Both Judy and Therese are parents of ninth graders, but both graciously took on this part of the job for the middle school. Without these people, this monumental task would have been insurmountable. Thank you again to each of them for everything that they did to make this a huge success without any major glitches!
Linda Scheffer, guidance counselor for the Green and Red Teams this year, will be out of the building until early or mid December because of health issues. While Mrs. Scheffer is out, Gordon Harping, a former RMS guidance counselor, will be overseeing her responsibilities. With his solid reputation as a counselor and his familiarity with RMS, Mr. Harping will be a great support to the students, parents, and teachers of the Green and Red Teams as we wait for Mrs. Scheffer’s return. His number is (703) 426-2214.
It takes more than academics to make a school a place where students feel they want to get involved. Robinson Middle School offers a variety of after-school activities for students. These activities are offered on late bus days, Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Late buses are provided to allow all students the opportunity to participate. These faculty-sponsored clubs and activities are open to middle school students. These activities meet on a regular basis on days that are scheduled by the sponsor. Other activities or events may be scheduled, depending on student and/or faculty interest. The activity will be advertised so students will know about it and scheduled in time for students to notify parents that they will be staying after school.
Reading Rams - The Reading Rams is an after school book club which likens itself to the Oprah Book Club. Students read young adult novels on their own time and meet monthly to share and discuss a variety of titles. The goal is to read for pleasure and interact with others who read for pleasure. All are welcome who enjoy good reading material and the company of friendly readers. Sponsor: Ms. Hill Meetings: Second Thursday of the month, Room A208.
The Medallion - The Medallion is the newspaper for RMS. It is produced by several groups of people: the reporters and editors in the two Journalism elective classes, and the Medallion After-School Club. Students must complete an application form during sign-up week at the beginning of each semester. The after-school club is for students who like to write, report, and learn how a newspaper is produced, especially how layouts are created on computers. Medallion club members do everything from planning photo shoots for illustrating stories, to working with PageMaker graphic design programs, to actually producing and printing the Medallion. Club members are expected to attend every meeting. Sponsor: Mrs. Hammer Meetings: Tech support on Wednesdays, Layout on Thursdays, Room E203.
The Math Team - The Math Team is geared to preparing students for school competitions. Challenging problems are worked on during the meeting to prepare for these competitions. Students need to be highly motivated to solve challenging math problems, and come regularly to the after school sessions. Sponsors: Ms. Garber, Mr. Arndt Meetings: Blue Wednesdays, Room A214.
Robinson Amateur Radio Club - The Robinson Amateur Radio Club is for students interested in learning about amateur radios, becoming licensed users, and setting up a station at school. Sponsor: Ms. Tarte Meetings: TBA Check subschool window.
Odyssey of the Mind - Odyssey of the Mind promotes creative thinking by challenging teams of students to solve divergent problems. The purpose of Odyssey of the Mind is to give students a unique learning experience that promises to be challenging and fun. Teams work together inside and outside of school to solve their problems. Students need to be creative and willing to put lots of work into a finished product. Teams create skits, compose music, construct props, and create anything else they need to solve the problem. There is a cost limit to each problem and teams can get very creative with recycled materials. Sponsor: Ms. Bartus and Ms. Bohrer Meetings: Wednesdays starting Oct. 17 in A116.Chess Club - The Chess Club provides a setting for students to play and learn chess with other students. Sponsor: Ms. Jungblut Meetings: Mondays, beginning Oct. 15, Room. Room A101.
Sewing Club - The Sewing Club allows students to make dolls, kittens, teddy bears, carrying bags, and other items to donate or collect. Students also learn to cross-stitch. Sponsor: Ms. Weisner Meetings: Every Wednesday beginning Oct. 17, D107.
College Partnership Program - The College Partnership Program creates a collaborative and collegial culture that responds to the achievement challenges of racial, ethnic, and language minorities. Through partnerships with parents, colleges and universities, and the business community, the Program facilitates: the development of positive attitudes toward academic achievement; increased communication between school staff and parents, increased minority enrollment and participation in advanced level courses, and, increased numbers of students, particularly minority students, who graduate from high school and enroll in college. Sponsors: Mr. Witherell, Ms. Crump, Ms. Mattison Meetings: 1st and 3rd Thursdays, Room A111.
Mindscape (Literary Magazine) - Mindscape is an outlet for middle school writings and artwork. It is open to students interested in writing and publishing their work. Sponsor: Mr. Witherell Meetings: TBA Check subschool window.
Intramurals - The intramural program offers a variety of athletic activities organized and promoted through P.E. classes. There are no tryouts and new activities are welcome. Students must be in the locker room by 2:20 and need to be dressed out in their PE uniform. Sponsor: Ms. Brodin Meetings: In progress, Monday and Wednesday, dates posted in subschool office windows.
Junior Optimist Club - The Junior Optimist Club is a service-oriented club. Students volunteer their services to projects that benefit the community and school. Sponsor: Ms. Folsom Meetings: Every other Monday beginning Oct. 16, Room A103.
Science Club – Do you like science? The Science Club will be doing a variety of fun things including dissecting a fetal pig, exploring weather and how scientists predict it, and learning about how this planet works. Sponsor: Ms. Hinman Meetings: 2nd Wednesday of the month in Room A102, beginning November 14th.

Don’t know what to do with all of those General Mills Box Tops for Education, your pile of Campbell product labels, or old greeting cards? Robinson Middle School WAT (Work Awareness and Transition) collects them and turns them in for cash, school supplies, and rewards. WAT will use the cash proceeds to pay for postage on the old greeting card fronts they organize and send to the children at St. Jude’s Ranch for Children in Nevada. The rest of the awards are used for WAT and Robinson students.
Starting this year, WAT students will be collecting the box tops, labels, and greeting cards once a week from their collection envelopes and boxes found in each sub school office and/or faculty lounge. If that’s a problem, just put them in an envelope and address it to MS WAT or Lia Frankiewicz, SS#8.

Support groups are being offered this year for Middle School students in the areas of Grief and Loss, and Separation and Divorce. These groups will provide students an opportunity to meet with peers to share experiences, feelings, and ideas regarding how they cope with these events and changes in their lives. The groups will begin when and if enough students have been identified who would like to participate. If you think your child would like to be involved in either of these two groups, please call Kathryn Brown, school psychologist for the Middle School, at 703-426-2213.

PARENTS OF SENIORS!
HELP SAIL YOUR SENIOR TO THE ROBINSON CRUISE-O ALL-NIGHT GRAD PARTY!
Calling for volunteers to help on the decorating committee for the All Night Grad Party! We have great ideas and are very enthusiastic about our theme, Robinson Cruise-O, but are in need of volunteers to help coordinate the decorations. We'll furnish a plan but need your help with some brainstorming. Come and help with the organization of this big event for the senior's last hurrah at Robinson. Interested? Call Heather Cropper at 703-249-8417 or Kathy Lance at 703-250-6606.
In addition to volunteers, the All-Night Grad Party Committee needs funds NOW to make this year’s party successful. The All-Night Grad Party is funded strictly through donations-we do not receive school or county funding for this event. There are many expenses involved in making sure the party has a secure location, activities to keep the young people busy and happy, fun decorations, entertainment, and good food. We must make several large payments soon to book the companies that will provide activities and entertainment for our young people on their special night. Previous senior classes have tremendously enjoyed their all-night party-let’s make sure our seniors have an equally safe and fun ending to their senior year! Please help by sending your contribution, payable to RSANGP-Class of 2002, P.O. Box 424, Fairfax Station, VA 22039. Here’s to a Bon Voyage for all our terrific Seniors!
